South East Queensland’s Miles Aerodrome has recently undergone a major expansion to meet the growing needs of the mining and resources projects in the area. The aerodrome is now capable of landing aircraft with 50 to 74 seats, and the runway has been extended to 1,590 metres long and 30 metres wide.
Miles Aerodrome is located along the Leichhardt Highway approximately 19 km south of the Leichhardt and Warrego Highway intersection, Miles Queensland, and 14 km north of the Leichhardt Highway and Roma-Condamine Road intersection, Condamine, Queensland.
As well as being a key transit point for the mining and resources industry, Miles Aerodrome also services the surrounding rural residents and the small towns of Miles, Condamine and Chinchilla. Up until now, chartered flights into this part of rural Queensland have been required to land at either Chinchilla or Roma Airport.
Upgrading Miles Queensland
The recent Miles Aerodrome upgrades consisted of a number of features. The runway has been extended, widened and strengthened and lighting has been added to support all weather conditions and night/day operations.
These upgrades will allow emergency services such as the Royal Flying Doctor Service and emergency medivac charter flights to effectively operate out of Miles aerodrome as required. A new pavement surface has also been designed, which will allow the airport to handle larger aircraft such as the 50 seat Dash 8-300 or the Fokker 50.
Miles Aerodrome operations are managed by Queensland Airports Limited on behalf of WDRC (Western Downs Regional Council). While the aerodrome is currently operating with some temporary facilities, planning is currently underway for land-side terminals and a new departure lounge.
The upgraded aerodrome will provide the Western Downs community with a valuable, high-quality infrastructure that will assist in supporting local regional economic development and provide a central transport hub for sustainable, long term growth in the region.
