Defence Aviation: Australia Commits to Weaponising Ghost Bats, Says Conroy

15 Aug, 2024 | News

Australia remains committed to arming its MQ-28A Ghost Bat drones, Defence Industry Minister Pat Conroy affirmed at the Defence Connect Defence Industry Development Strategy Summit. Despite speculation about the drone focusing solely on intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR), Conroy emphasised that weaponisation is still a priority.

Australia’s Strategic Investment

Revealed in May 2020, the MQ-28A Ghost Bat (also known as the Loyal Wingman) is designed to assist both crewed and uncrewed aircraft using artificial intelligence (AI). Conroy highlighted the significant investment in the program, including more than $800 million in funding and the creation of over 350 jobs. A key component of this investment is the new $550 million Boeing facility in Toowoomba, dedicated to manufacturing advanced drone components.

Enhancing Defence Capabilities

The Ghost Bat program underscores the strategic importance of maintaining robust defence capabilities. It aims to enhance Australia’s self-reliance in defence and secure critical supply chains. The current geopolitical climate, marked by conflicts such as the war in Ukraine, has amplified the need for such capabilities.

GWEO Enterprise

Australia is also advancing its Guided Weapons and Explosive Ordnance (GWEO) Enterprise to ensure a steady supply of munitions. Conroy stressed the importance of domestic manufacturing, starting with the assembly of imported components and progressing to full-scale local production. This initiative is vital for national security and strengthens ties with international partners, particularly the United States.

Government’s Defence Strategy

The federal government’s broader defence strategy includes procurement reforms and increased funding for defence industry grants, totaling $183.8 million. These measures aim to enhance Australia’s defence industrial base, which employs over 100,000 Australians, and foster stronger partnerships between the defence sector and industry.

While AI plays a significant role in modernising air traffic control and defence, human expertise remains crucial. The integration of AI with human capabilities ensures the safety, efficiency, and effectiveness of air travel and defence operations.
