The Historical Aircraft Restoration Society (HARS) has begun a new project to restore a rare, nine-decade-old Douglas DC-2 aircraft, marking a significant moment in preserving aviation history. The aircraft, which was introduced in the early 1930s, holds historical importance as one of the first successful commercial airliners and a predecessor to the more well-known DC-3.
The DC-2 being restored was originally part of Australian National Airways’ (ANA) fleet and played a pivotal role in commercial aviation during its time. HARS’ restoration aims to bring this aircraft back to its former glory and preserve its legacy for future generations to appreciate. The project will be carried out by HARS volunteers at their museum in Illawarra, New South Wales, and will involve meticulous work to ensure authenticity in every detail.
This restoration effort adds to HARS’ impressive collection of preserved and operational historical aircraft, allowing aviation enthusiasts and the public to engage with aviation heritage. Once completed, the DC-2 will join HARS’ fleet of restored planes, offering a glimpse into the early days of commercial flight.
