Iconic Waldorf Astoria to Bring Unprecedented Luxury to Sydney Harbour

26 May, 2025 | News

Australia’s luxury hospitality scene is poised for a transformative addition, with the prestigious Waldorf Astoria brand set to make its Australian debut in a prime Sydney Harbour location.

New York Legacy Meets Sydney Harbour

The Waldorf Astoria, a name synonymous with uncompromising luxury since its New York City origins, is now taking shape between Sydney’s two most recognisable landmarks—the Opera House and Harbour Bridge. All 26 floors of the structure have been completed, marking a critical phase in the $520 million project.

‘This will be Australia’s most luxurious hotel,’ declared Tom Mackellar, Lendlease Chief Executive of Development. ‘We’re bringing a little bit of New York to Sydney but giving it an Australian touch.’

The strategic positioning offers guests what will undoubtedly be among the most coveted views in Australia, with sweeping panoramas of Sydney Harbour from virtually every aspect of the property.

World-Class Amenities and Culinary Excellence

The Hilton-owned luxury brand is sparing no expense in creating an extraordinary guest experience across its 227 rooms. A standout feature will be a spectacular rooftop bar extending outward to maximise the harbour views.

‘There’s going to be an iconic bar with a roof that comes out, you’ll be able to walk down to our main restaurant down below,’ explained Paul Hutton, Hilton Hotels Area Vice President.

Adding to the culinary anticipation, a high-profile celebrity chef has already committed to helming the hotel’s signature restaurant, though their identity remains under wraps. This gastronomic partnership aligns with Waldorf Astoria’s global reputation for exceptional dining experiences.

Australian Billionaire Backing

The landmark development has attracted significant Australian investment, with billionaires Nicola and Andrew ‘Twiggy’ Forrest providing financial backing through their investment company.

‘We are proud to be bringing the best of Australia to the world,’ stated John Hartman, CEO of Tattarang, the Forrests’ investment firm. This commitment from one of Australia’s wealthiest families underscores the project’s significance on the national luxury landscape.

Catalyst for Precinct Renewal

The arrival of such a prestigious international hotel brand has intensified calls for broader redevelopment of the Circular Quay precinct. Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore has used the opportunity to advocate for further enhancements to the area.

‘When will the Cahill Expressway come down? We’ve been doing all the work on this side of the street,’ Moore remarked, suggesting the hotel development should serve as impetus for addressing longstanding concerns about the expressway and modernising the adjacent ferry terminal.

Opening Timeline

The Waldorf Astoria Sydney is scheduled to welcome its first guests in late 2025, with bookings expected to open several months prior. The hotel is positioned to become the benchmark for luxury accommodation in Australia and a significant addition to the Waldorf Astoria portfolio worldwide.

For Sydney’s tourism and luxury sectors, the development represents not just a new accommodation option but a transformative addition that could elevate the city’s global standing in premium travel destinations.
