International Maritime Warfare Exercise Kakadu Kicks Off in Darwin

13 Sep, 2024 | News

Australia’s premier maritime warfare event, Exercise Kakadu, has officially commenced in Darwin, bringing together military forces from over 30 nations. This biennial exercise, coordinated by the Royal Australian Navy (RAN), is designed to strengthen regional security and cooperation, with more than 3,000 personnel from various nations participating. The exercise involves warships, helicopters, and maritime patrol aircraft, all engaged in complex maritime operations.

Chief of Navy, Vice Admiral Mark Hammond, highlighted the significance of Kakadu in fostering stronger international relationships and improving interoperability. He stated, “Kakadu is the largest and most significant international exercise hosted by the Royal Australian Navy. It deepens relationships and interoperability between participating armed forces.” He further emphasised, “There’s no economic security without maritime security. Each of the countries participating in Kakadu is united in this perspective and our shared commitment to keeping our nations safe, secure, and strong.”

Since its inception in 1993, Exercise Kakadu has continued to grow, with each edition expanding in scope and complexity. This year’s exercises will focus on mission planning, constabulary operations, anti-submarine warfare, air defence, and more. Additionally, the event includes an extensive at-sea program and on-land activities such as a Fleet Commanders’ conference, briefings, and cultural and social events.
