Understanding JESTA

Named JESTA (Japan Electronic System for Travel Authorisation), the system follows similar models to the USA’s ESTA and European equivalents. Travellers from 74 countries who currently enjoy visa-free visits to Japan will require approved online JESTA applications before boarding any aircraft bound for Japan.

The electronic travel authorisation platform is expected to launch in 2028, with estimated costs between ¥1,500-¥4,000 (AU$15-$40) per person.

What This Means for Charter Passengers

For those travelling via private jet hire, JESTA requirements apply identically to commercial passengers. However, private charter services offer distinct advantages when managing international travel documentation.

Charter operators can coordinate JESTA applications alongside flight planning, ensuring all passengers have approved authorisations before departure. This proactive approach eliminates last-minute complications and maintains the seamless travel experience private jet passengers expect.

Application Requirements

Travellers must submit details including flight information, reason for visiting Japan, intended stay duration and departure date. With this data available to Japan’s immigration service before arrival, the process should expedite airport entry—particularly beneficial for private jet passengers accustomed to efficient customs and immigration procedures.

Australians will still enjoy visa-free stays in Japan for up to 90 days, with JESTA covering multiple trips over one to two years.

Japan’s Growing Appeal

Japan remains exceptionally popular with Australians, with a weaker Yen strengthening the country’s appeal. According to the Japan National Tourism Organisation, over one million Australians visited Japan in the year to June 2025—a record figure, with 2024 seeing 50 per cent growth compared to the previous year.

For business charter flights or luxury charter services, Japan offers exceptional destinations from Tokyo’s business districts to Osaka’s cultural attractions, with private aviation providing the most efficient access to the country’s diverse regions.
