Joby Aviation has released its Q4 and full-year 2024 Shareholder Letter, highlighting significant milestones in aircraft certification, fleet expansion, and strategic partnerships, positioning the company as a frontrunner in the emerging electric air taxi industry.
Certification and Testing Advancements
In a major regulatory breakthrough, Joby has advanced to the fourth of five stages in the Federal Aviation Administration’s certification process for commercial passenger operations in the United States. The company expects to begin Type Inspection Authorization (TIA) flight testing within the next 12 months—a critical step towards commercial certification.
Simultaneously, Joby expanded its international certification efforts by becoming the first company to fly an electric air taxi as part of Korea’s K-UAM Grand Challenge, strengthening its position in the growing Asian market for urban air mobility solutions.
Fleet Expansion and Manufacturing Progress
The company continues to demonstrate manufacturing capabilities with several significant achievements:
- Delivered a second aircraft to the Department of Defense at Edwards Air Force Base, building on its strategic military partnership
- Expanded its flight test fleet to five aircraft, including a hydrogen-hybrid variant
- Successfully conducted an impressive 561-mile (900km) flight with its hydrogen-electric aircraft model
These developments showcase Joby’s ability to scale production while continuing to innovate across different power systems and aircraft configurations.
Strong Financial Position
By the close of Q4 2024, Joby maintained a solid financial foundation with $933 million in cash, equivalents, and marketable securities. This position is set to strengthen further with an expected $500 million investment from Toyota, to be delivered in two $250 million tranches. All regulatory approvals for the first tranche have been secured, reinforcing Toyota’s commitment to Joby’s vision.
Looking Ahead: 2025 Milestones
The coming year represents what the company calls ‘a critical inflection point’ for both Joby and the entire electric air mobility industry. Key upcoming milestones include:
- Delivery of an aircraft to Dubai by mid-2025 to demonstrate passenger readiness
- Commencement of TIA flight testing in the United States
- Continued scaling of manufacturing operations
Leadership Perspective
JoeBen Bevirt, founder and CEO of Joby Aviation, expressed confidence in the company’s position: ‘The sector-leading progress we made throughout 2024 puts Joby in a great position to capitalise on the opportunities presented by America’s renewed focus on innovation and manufacturing.’
He added, ‘The next 12 months mark a critical inflection point, not just for Joby, but for our entire industry, as we look ahead to carrying our first passengers, and I’m proud that Joby continues to lead the way towards this new era of flight.’
With these achievements, Joby continues to strengthen its position as a pioneer in electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) technology, moving closer to its goal of transforming urban transportation through sustainable air mobility solutions.
