Luxury Travel’s Next Trend Isn’t a Destination. It’s a Route Around the Calendar

Virtuoso, the global luxury travel network, has just released its findings from Virtuoso Travel Week 2026, and the standout trend has nothing to do with where wealthy travellers are going. It’s about when. Autumn bookings through the network are up 59% this year, with sales climbing 69%, as what Virtuoso calls the “fallcation” replaces the old idea of a summer holiday entirely.

Luxury Travel's Next Trend Isn't a Destination. It's a Route Around the Calendar

The shift makes sense once you look at what’s been happening in the Northern Hemisphere. Europe endured a brutal run of heatwaves from May 2026, with its hottest June-to-July on record in the west and wildfires across Greece, Portugal, France, Spain and Italy. Wealthy travellers noticed, and they’ve moved. September sales through Virtuoso’s network are up 77% year on year, and Misty Belles, the network’s spokesperson, put it bluntly: shoulder season is now peak season, and anyone hoping for a September bargain is out of luck.

The second trend Virtuoso identified matters just as much for how these trips actually get booked. “City-maxxing,” or stringing several destinations into one extended itinerary, is on the rise, and about half of these trips cross into another country entirely. France, Italy and the UK feature in the most common pairings, but Virtuoso also flagged younger travellers stitching together far more ambitious routes, Singapore, London and New York in a single trip being one example. Crucially, Virtuoso’s own reporting notes that this kind of travel is largely fuelled by private flights, often using a second home or residence as a base to work from between stops. A multi-week, multi-city, multi-country itinerary isn’t really a booking problem. It’s a scheduling one, and that’s exactly where private aviation earns its keep.

There’s a neat inversion worth pointing out for anyone planning travel from Australia. Northern Hemisphere autumn lines up with our spring, so the same instinct driving European and American travellers toward September and October applies just as well in reverse, whether that’s timing an outbound trip to Europe’s cooler, quieter months or welcoming inbound visitors chasing exactly that logic here.

Virtuoso also flagged something else worth noting: as AI-generated itineraries increasingly overlap and steer travellers toward the same crowded hotspots, half of advisors are now seeing clients deliberately avoid over-touristed destinations. It’s a trend that rewards genuinely tailored planning over algorithm-driven suggestions, and it’s one more reason a city-maxxing itinerary benefits from being built around real access rather than a generic list.

If your own plans stretch across several cities or countries this season, coordinating private flights, timing and ground arrangements is where things get complicated fast. Adagold Aviation’s luxury charter team manages exactly this kind of multi-stop planning, and our private jet hire options can flex around an itinerary that changes destination every few days.
