IHG has relaunched the former Hotel X in Fortitude Valley as The Alva Hotel Brisbane, Vignette Collection, giving anyone arranging private jet Brisbane itineraries a genuinely different option from the CBD business hotels. This is a repositioning rather than a new build, and the distinction matters, because the bones of the property were already good and the work has gone into identity rather than construction.
What has changed
The Alva takes its name from a word meaning light, and the transformation starts in a redesigned lobby with an ‘Alva at Home’ shop and original artwork. Rooms and suites have been refreshed, the 15-metre rooftop pool has been reworked, and the hotel leans hard into the Valley’s music and art scene rather than pretending it sits somewhere quieter. Dining runs through Iris Rooftop Bar & Restaurant, operated by Brisbane’s Ghanem Group with Spanish-inspired plates and skyline views, and Bisou Bisou for contemporary French downstairs.
The Fortitude Valley proposition
Location is the real argument here. The Alva sits on Brunswick Street, minutes from James Street’s retail and dining strip, Howard Smith Wharves and Fortitude Music Hall, which is about as dense a concentration of live music, restaurants and galleries as Brisbane offers. That makes it a base for a culture-led stay rather than a place to sleep between meetings, and it complements the newer river-end openings like W Brisbane instead of competing directly with them.
Why it matters for charter travellers
Brisbane usually gets treated as a gateway. You land, you connect, you leave for the reef or the coast. The Alva is part of a broader shift that makes the city worth scheduling for its own sake, whether that’s an overnight before a regional leg, a hospitality weekend or a private event.
The itinerary that works best is unfussy. Arrive privately in the afternoon, check in, dine in the precinct, take a drink on the roof, then leave the next morning for the Whitsundays, the Scenic Rim or outback Queensland. One well-planned night does more for a trip than three rushed ones, and it only works if the departure runs to your clock.
