The headline question everyone’s asking about Qantas Project Sunrise is “would you really sit on a plane for 22 hours?” It’s the wrong question for most Australians. What is Project Sunrise?
Qantas flew its first A350-1000ULR for the program on a maiden test flight out of Toulouse on 2 June 2026, checking systems and the new rear fuel tank built for ultra-long range. The aircraft are configured to carry just 238 passengers, the lowest seat density of any A350-1000 in service, with more than 40% of seats in premium cabins and a dedicated Wellbeing Zone for the up-to-22-hour journeys. Qantas has confirmed the inaugural Sydney-London service will launch in October 2027, with tickets on sale from February 2027, and the first aircraft due for delivery in April 2027.
It’s a genuinely exciting development. It’s also a small number of aircraft, which means limited routes and frequencies. Some one-stop A380 services through hubs like Singapore will stay in place for volume, and early years tend to bring schedule adjustments while everything beds in.
The gateway problem nobody mentions
Here’s the catch most travellers only discover the hard way. If you don’t live in Sydney, a non-stop to London still starts with a domestic flight into SYD, sometimes a terminal transfer, and all the delay risk that comes with a network already strained by high fuel costs and capacity cuts. Miss your connection to a 22-hour flight and the cost isn’t just a rebooking; it’s lost time, lost sleep and a wrecked first day at the other end.
