The Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) has marked a significant milestone by deploying its F-35A Lightning II aircraft to Exercise Bersama Lima 2024, held in Malaysia and Singapore. This deployment underscores Australia’s commitment to regional security and enhances interoperability among the Five Power Defence Arrangements (FPDA) nations.

Strengthening Regional Defence Collaboration

Exercise Bersama Lima is an annual military exercise involving Australia, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, and the United Kingdom. Established in 1971, the FPDA focuses on the collective defence of Malaysia and Singapore. The 2024 exercise saw the participation of approximately 400 Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel, working alongside their FPDA counterparts to train air, land, and maritime forces.

First Deployment of F-35A Lightning II Aircraft

This year’s exercise was notable for the RAAF’s inaugural deployment of the F-35A Lightning II aircraft in an FPDA exercise. The inclusion of this advanced fifth-generation fighter jet aimed to enhance training realism and sophistication, contributing to the overall effectiveness of the exercise.

Enhancing Interoperability and Regional Stability

Vice Admiral Justin Jones, Chief of Joint Operations, highlighted that Australia’s participation in Exercise Bersama Lima reflects a steadfast commitment to the FPDA and the shared vision of a peaceful, stable, and prosperous region. The deployment of significant RAAF capabilities, alongside units from the Australian Army and Royal Australian Navy, demonstrates Australia’s dedication to collective security in the region.

Looking Ahead

The successful integration of the F-35A into Exercise Bersama Lima sets a precedent for future FPDA exercises, paving the way for more advanced and integrated training operations. This development not only strengthens the defence capabilities of the participating nations but also reinforces their collective commitment to maintaining regional security and stability.
