RFDS Takes Delivery of World’s First Aeromedical PC-12 PRO

The Royal Flying Doctor Service has taken a significant step forward in aeromedical capability, with RFDS Central Operations accepting delivery of the world’s first aeromedical-configured Pilatus PC-12 PRO. It is the first of five new aircraft arriving from Switzerland as part of a AUD 60 million upgrade programme rolling out across 2026.

A Flying Intensive Care Unit

The PC-12 PRO enters service as a purpose-built critical care platform. Its pressurised cabin of more than nine cubic metres, combined with a large cargo door and integrated lift system, allows for rapid patient loading – a factor that can be decisive in remote and regional responses. Next-generation avionics and weight-saving design across the airframe give operational crews more flexibility on fuel load and patient capacity across the vast South Australian and Northern Territory corridors the RFDS regularly serves.

The RFDS has described the aircraft as a flying intensive care unit, and the configuration backs that up. The PC-12 PRO represents a meaningful capability uplift over previous aeromedical configurations, with the design developed specifically to meet the demands of Australia’s most challenging operational environments.

Why the PC-12 PRO Matters for Australian Aviation

The Pilatus PC-12 has long been a workhorse of Australian regional and charter operations, valued for its combination of range, short-field performance and cabin versatility. The PRO variant takes those attributes and applies them to the most demanding use case in the country: getting critically ill patients from remote communities to definitive care as quickly and safely as possible.

For the broader aircraft charter sector, the RFDS programme reinforces what operators and charter specialists have always known about the PC-12 platform – it remains one of the most capable and adaptable single-engine turboprops available, and its performance credentials in Australia’s remote interior are unmatched.

The five-aircraft order represents a significant long-term commitment to the PC-12 PRO platform and to the communities that depend on RFDS services. Delivery of the remaining aircraft is scheduled to continue through 2026.

Further details on the programme are available via the RFDS official announcement.
