A Photographer’s Paradise: The New Lala Limpopo Hide at Botswana’s Mashatu Reserve

12 Nov, 2024 | News

This October, wildlife photography enthusiasts have an exciting new destination: the Lala Limpopo Sleepout Hide, a purpose-built luxury hideaway in Botswana’s Mashatu Reserve in the Northern Tuli Game Reserve. Designed to offer both concealment and comfort, this unique hide allows photographers an unparalleled view of animals at close range as they visit the nearby waterhole—formerly known as Pete’s Pond.

The “sleepout safari suite” is a collaboration between Mashatu and C4 Photo Safaris, created to provide ground-level perspectives of the local wildlife. Built partially underground, Lala Limpopo offers photographers an intimate and immersive experience with nature, capturing the perfect shot while being just a few feet away from the action.

Available exclusively for private bookings, Lala Limpopo can accommodate up to four guests and includes amenities like a small kitchen, a lounge/dining space, a fully equipped bathroom with a shower, and a private bedroom for the accompanying tour leader, Mashatu ranger, or C4 guide. The guide stays on hand to ensure safety and offer expert advice and photography tips.

To enhance the photography experience, innovative lighting around the waterhole features adjustable side, front, and back lighting with control over color temperature and angle. Motion sensors detect nocturnal activity, allowing photographers to adjust settings and capture animals during the night.

Photographers will find features tailored for editing between sessions, allowing them to refine shots on the go. Additionally, a small outdoor courtyard by the rear entrance provides a tranquil space to enjoy the outdoors without disrupting the wildlife.

Mashatu’s existing underground hide, Matebole, has already produced award-winning photography, including Greg du Toit’s acclaimed “Essence of Elephants,” which won Wildlife Photographer of the Year in 2013. Lala Limpopo is expected to become equally iconic for photographers seeking an extraordinary safari experience.
